Why Paper Weight Matters in Stationery

stack of paper

If you've ever held a beautifully made card and thought this just feels different, paper weight is most of why.
Paper weight is measured in lb (pounds) or gsm (grams per square meter). The higher the number, the denser and more substantial the paper. Standard copy paper sits around 20 lb / 75 gsm. A quality notecard typically starts at 80 lb / 216 gsm and goes up from there.

Why it matters:
Heavy paper feels intentional. It holds ink cleanly, doesn't bleed through, and photographs with a richness that lightweight paper simply can't match. When someone picks up a heavy card, their brain registers it as valuable before they've read a single word.

For writing: Heavier paper also means your pen glides rather than drags, and there's no ghosting on the other side. If you're building a stationery collection worth keeping, weight is the first thing to consider. The paper should feel like it means something — because it does.
